The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland. This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

Helen has sent in a very large and well-researched Appelbe family tree, centred around Cork. She says:
“It has taken me and some relatives quite a while to trace the family due to the various problems associated with the Irish records. The oldest ancestor that I have traced is Alexander born c. 1725 (not known where) who died in 1794 in Bandon Co. Cork.
There are various family stories about their origins, including that they are Huguenot/Walloon descendants some of whom fought on William’s side in the Battle of the Boyne. However, no-one knows if this is true or just rumour. They intermarried with the main protestant families of the area some of whom originated in Somerset and are believed to have Huguenot connections. I do know that they were at one time involved with the linen trade so could have come over anytime from James I to William’s reign but whether from England or the Continent I’m not sure.
There are also many Appelbe’s around the Antrim area that could suggest movement from the Northern England and Scottish clearances but again no documents to support. I believe they were linen merchants to start with and then farmers. My grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather were County Cork surveyors and my lot came over to England in the late 1920’s following separation.”
UPDATE: We have recently received some more details from Trevor about the branch of APPELBEs descended from Charles Greaves APPELBE who emigrated to New Zealand, along with some super photos (click on images to enlarge):

NAME INDEX
both these charts are still very wide, so you will need to enlarge them in your Adobe browser and then scroll across and down to view all the branches
The most distant Appelbe in this line that we have located so far was Alexander APPELBE (~1725-1794) who was a 'Linnen Weaver'. He was married to Mary in about 1776 and the couple had two known children; Pierce and Edward. The family tree for Alexander’s descendants is too large to present as a single pdf, so it has been divided into two charts, one for each of his two sons:
The 1914 marriage of James Hobbs (standing) and Alice Maud Appelbe - Ted Appelbe was best man (seated) and Daisy Appelbe (seated) was bridesmaid
Les Appelbe
William James Appelbe (Bill) was mentioned in Dispatches for gallantry on the Western Front.
above from left: Charles Greaves Appelbe; Alice Maud with two eldest children; Alice Maud; Bert Appelbe who was killed in action at Ypres in 1917; Edward Appelbe; Leslie, Jean and Edward Appelbe
DNA - We would love to hear from a male direct line APPELBE descendant who would be willing to participate in our yDNA program. The results could help us to discover where Alexander APPELBE originated. Please use the contact form on the left to find out more about DNA testing.
