The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland. This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

Robert belonged to a line of Applebys from Bedfordshire - Robert enlisted in the Bedfordshire Militia at the age of twenty. After only a few months, Robert volunteered to join the regular army - in the 40th Regiment of Foot. Paul Cope has written a fascinating biography of Robert's life, focussing on the twenty years he served in the army - including his time fighting Napoleon's army at Waterloo. He is believed to be the only APPLEBY to fight in that battle.
This image shows an Officer and a Soldier of the 40th Foot (though Robert's plume would have been green)

I have called this line 'Blacksmiths of Bedfordshire' - largely because this trade featured in at least four generations of this family, with many of the wives and daughters working in the hat trade as straw plaiters. The line is headed by a Matthew APPLEBY and his wife Mary (Knight) who married in Bedford in 1753 - but so far, we don't know where Matthew came from.
Although no other family members seem to have travelled as far afield as Robert the soldier (who served in America, Australia and India as well as around Europe during his time in the Army), the census suggests that several family groups spent time in Essex, Middlesex, Lancashire, and Northumberland.
If there are any direct male descendants of this line who would be prepared to take a yDNA test, this may provide some clues on where to search for Matthew's birth!
This is a very large line, so I have had to divide the descendancy charts up into separate sections - Click on the chart numbers to open each chart, and you will need to zoom into the images and scroll across to read all the details (particularly for Chart Three which is very wide):
CHART ONE - shows Matthew and Mary Appleby, their children and grandchildren
CHART TWO - shows the descendants of William Appleby and Sarah (Carrin)
CHART THREE - shows the descendants of Richard Appleby and Sarah (Osborn)
CHART FOUR - shows descendants of John Appleby and Cecilia (Setchell)

DATA SOURCES:
Unfortunately, none of the main commercial databases have yet added parish registers with images for the country of Bedfordshire; freeREG have transcribed several parishes from the mid 18thC (and they are very reliable), but many entries were sourced from Family Search. For the period after General Registration (1837) I have used the new GRO indexes which helpfully provide mother's maiden name for all birth entries, and age at death for all death entries.
If any reader with Appleby ancestry in Bedfordshire has the opportunity to visit Bedford Archives, I should be very grateful to receive any parish register details you are able to provide.
