To view this site properly and access the spreadsheets and family tree charts, you will need Adobe Reader installed on your computer - use the above link to download the latest FREE version of this application. If viewing on a mobile device, the standard view works best - though some of the images may be rotated, sorry I have not been able to overcome this problem.
please help us to buy more DNA kits to carry on our research by making a donation to our General Fund - this page explains how

The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland. This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.
PLEASE NOTE: if you are viewing this site on an Apple device running IOS 13, you may experience problems with page layout, over-lapping text, etc. Hopefully, Apple will resolve these issues very soon,

THE SMALL PRINT please read this
Since setting up the Appleby DNA Project, we have tried whenever possible to offer a subsidised test kit to the first male descendant from each Appleby line to volunteer to take a yDNA test. DNA testing is expensive (a 37 marker yDNA kit with discount for surname projects normally costs $150 plus p+p) and as we all benefit from the results, it seems only fair that we should all contribute towards the cost of testing. We would like to be able to subsidise the cost of yDNA kits so that volunteers only need to make a contribution of around 50% of the cost of their own kit, but as a small non-profit making organisation* it is very hard to attract funding to subsidise the costs of purchasing kits, so this does depend on the balance of our Fund.
Since the start of this project, various generous members have made donations into our General Fund at Family Tree DNA, either to pay for someone else to test on their behalf or to express their thanks for our assistance with their family history research. We are most grateful to these kind folk (you know who you all are!) The money held in this Fund can only be set against the purchase of new kits or upgrades to existing kits.
However, the Guild of One-Name Studies has recently negotiated an agreement with Family Tree DNA for the Guild to provide discounted test kits to members who run DNA projects. Until recently these were priced at £80 incl of post and packing, which worked out much cheaper than buying kits from ftDNA, even during their flash sales. However, as a result of Brexit and the poor exchange rate, they Guild have recently had to increase the price to £95, which is still a good saving on the price offered by Family Tree DNA. As the Appleby One-Name Study is a member of the Guild, we would like to benefit from these reduced rates - but it means we need to collect donations ourselves in order to purchase these kits in £ sterling. Wherever you live in the World, you can make online payments in £ sterling, however depending on the method you use (PayPal, debit card, credit card) you may be charged a small fee to cover the exchange rate.
If you have any concerns about using Paypal or other online banking and would prefer to use a different method to make a donation, please use the Contact Form to get in touch.
* Our Appleby One-name Study and associated DNA Project is run by three enthusiastic genealogists on an entirely voluntary basis. We do not even receive expenses for overheads such as maintaining websites.
As at Dec 2019, we currently hold the following in our Appleby accounts:
GENERAL FUND HELD AT FAMILY TREE DNA .... $4.00
APPLEBY FUND AT PAYPAL .......................................£97.30
I recently bought two yDNA kits from the Guild of One-Name Studies with the balance in the PayPal Fund, which I am holding for the next two volunteers!
As you can see - we need donations badly if we are to continue to subsidise the cost of yDNA kits!
If you have been helped by this site and would like to make a donation into our General Fund, which will be used to purchase yDNA kits or upgrades to existing kits when necessary, please click the button below, which will take you to our PayPal account. (If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also make your payment securely online with a credit or debit card from the payment form)
Please note: you will need to enter an amount in £ sterling on the PayPal form - currency exchange rates vary from day to day, but as a very rough guide, a donation of £10.00 is equivalent to
US $ 12.85
CAN $ 17.28
AUS $ 17.28
NZ $ 18.13
SA Rand 166.63
[Exchange rates updated May 2017]
IMPORTANT: If you make a donation to our PayPal Fund it is crucial you notify me my email, because I will not receive an automated notification!
If you prefer to pay in US dollars, you can still continue to make donations in dollars into our General Fund at Family Tree DNA by clicking the DONATE button on our Group Project page - we can use such donations to purchase upgrades - however, it would save us money if you used the PayPal account above to pay in £sterling ... see notes below.
