The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland.  This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

John Appleby of Kelloe, Co Durham

This tree was submitted by Joe who has traced this line back to a marriage in Kelloe, Durham, in 1769 between John Appleby and Mary Davi(d)son of Corbridge, Northumberland.  Joe has traced the lines of all the descendants of this couple from on-line sources and along the way has made contact with descendants in South Africa and Yorkshire (both from maternal lines).  Some descendants of this line emigrated to California and Pennsylvania.  I am also grateful to Craig, who has provided additional information for this line.

Coincidentally, this line is linked through marriage with a descendant of the line of John Appleby, exciseman of Corbridge - and though both lines have their roots in Northumberland, the uniting marriage took place in the USA!  (So far, Joe has not managed to find a link further up the tree)

We have recently received a set of yDNA results from a descendant of this line, and discovered that they match the Corbridge Appleby line in 35/37 markers.  Both sets of results fall into our NORTHERN GROUP TWO.  So Joe is thrilled to know that his mother's line of Kelloe Applebys is connected to his wife's line of Corbridge Applebys.  And in fact Joe recently discovered that he is connected to the donor of the Kelloe yDNA twice over ... you can read about how he found out here.

This tree is too large to show in one chart, so it is divided into three - though the second chart is still VERY wide - you will need to scroll across and down to view all the members of Chart 2.

  • CHART 1 - descendants of John Appleby and Mary Davidson (mar 1769 Kelloe, Co Durham, ENG)

  • CHART 2 - descendants of William Appleby (1st mar to Jane Lee in 1827  Penshaw, Co Durham ENG, 2nd mar to Mary Ann Carter, mar 1848 Gateshead, Co Durham,  ENG)

  • CHART 3 - descendants of Joseph Appleby and Isabella Raffell (mar 1838 in Durham, ENG)
