The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland.  This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

Joseph Appleby and Sarah Gentry of Layer de la Haye, Essex

Joseph and Sarah were both born in Layer de la Haye and married there in 1825 - however a number of their descendants moved away from Essex:

  • their eldest son Joseph went to work in London as an ostler where he met and married an Applebee girl from another line altogether (Matthew Applebee, sawyer from Berkshire) - three generations of their descendants lived in Woolwich, Kent

  • their next son William was a gardener and later a florist - he married Eliza Parker from Lewisham and most of their descendants also remained in Lewisham, several being florists.  However one of his sons Henry emigrated with his family to Australia.

  • third son James disappeared after the 1841 census

  • Next son Henry was a shopkeeper and married a local girl, Harriet Hurwick and their children were all born in Layer de la Haye - however I have not managed to find any of them in the 1871 census ... did they emigrate?

  • fifth son John was a bricklayer/builder and his children were raised in Lambeth Surrey

  • daughter Mary Ann married an Essex lad but they too moved to Lambeth

  • next daughter Susannah disappeared after the 1861 census - she may have married?

  • sixth son Charles married Sarah Hurwick (sister of Harriet?) was a farmer and postmaster in Layer de la Haye though his son became a butcher in Kensington and his daughter married cousin William J Appleby and moved to Catford in Kent

  • seventh son Alfred also moved to London where he married a South London girl Amelia - in 1911 he was living with his daughter's family in Tottenham.

I am most grateful to Lorraine and William who have provided additional information to extend this family tree.
