The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland.  This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

Miles Applebee of Dedham

According to census entries, Miles Applebee was born in Dedham, Essex, in about 1790.  He married Elizabeth and there first child was born in Chipping Hill, a small village close to Witham, but their next five known children were all born in either Fryerning or nearby Ingatestone, villages to the south west of Chelmsford.

Miles was a bricklayer by trade, as were all four of his sons.  Starting with son Edward, one by one almost the entire family migrated across the Thames Estuary and settled in Kent ; initially in Gillingham, but some members lived in Chatham, New Brompton and Plumstead.

From census information, I believe that Miles may have had a brother John Applebee, who was born in Witham in about 1803 (Miles and Elizabeth's daughter Elizabeth was married to Webb Overhead but she was living with her father in one census and her uncle John Applebee in another).  If any reader can provide more information about Miles Applebee's family, please do contact me using the Contact Form.

LATEST ... We now have yDNA results for a descendant of this line, which confirms that this family shares a common ancestor with the lines of Nathaniel of Langenhoe, George of Ardleigh and James and Sarah of Layer de la Haye.  The four sets of results are very closely matched, which suggests that the common ancestor lived fairly recently.  All assistance in locating the relevant parish records to identify him will be greatly appreciated!
